Make a Weekday Breakfast with Overnight Oats

On a busy morning, even making toast can feel like one task too many. Overnight oats move that small bit of work to the evening: stir together a few ingredients, chill them, and breakfast will be waiting in the refrigerator.

Begin with an easy ratio

Combine half a cup of rolled oats with half a cup of milk in a jar or bowl. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate overnight; the oats soften as they absorb the liquid.

If you like a softer, looser breakfast, add another splash of milk in the morning. Rolled oats give a pleasantly chewy result, while quick oats soften more and can become mushier.

Add flavor without fuss

A pinch of cinnamon and a sliced banana are an easy starting point. You can also stir in a spoonful of peanut butter, or add berries for a fresher, brighter bowl.

For crunch, wait until morning to add chopped nuts or granola. Keeping them separate overnight helps them stay crisp instead of softening in the oat mixture.

Make only what you need

Prepare one portion at a time until you know what texture you like. A jar is handy for taking breakfast along, but any covered food container works just as well.

Treat the basic oats-and-milk mix as a starting point, not a rule. One small change—more liquid, a different fruit, or a pinch of spice—can make the same easy breakfast feel right for the day ahead.
